DJ Magazine, September 2003 - EP Review

With a reputation that has been cemented by being at the forefront of all things progressive throughout the last twenty years, Graham Massey finally commits his far-reaching Toolshed project to vinyl. Consisting of an ever-morphing line up that began life as a live impromptu session act back in ’98, Toolshed aims to reach the parts that other acts just simply can’t reach. So although on this five tracker there are three covers, don’t expect twee pop classics or rehashed seventies disco-isms. Expect instead flawless interpretations from Sun Ra, Ennio Morricone, a storming tribute to John McLaughlin’s ‘Marbles’ and original hair-raising horn-led material in the form of the operatic nuances of ‘Nananananaanaa’, and the psychotic double drumming and punchy analogue filth of ‘Gobots’. A different class altogether. (5/5)
